This is why it’s not worth waiting for the tender: our partner’s automation pays for itself within six months
Our partner, who runs a toy wholesaler, contacted us because he wanted to optimize his packaging processes as soon as possible, given the ever-increasing prices of packaging materials. The site had been using manual packaging, which was much more material- and time-consuming than machine packaging, and was practically immeasurable in cost, as the specific material requirement could vary per employee and per pallet.
Assignment:
At a site where the average daily turnover is 100-150 pallets, and up to 300 during the season, manual packaging represents a significant waste of material and labor. Another problem was that since the workers manually wrapped the 20 my packaging material onto the stacks without pre-stretching, they obviously could not achieve as tight a fixation as a packaging machine with a pre-stretching function, and thus the holding force often left something to be desired.
Suggestion:
We solved the mechanization of the packaging with two Sfera semi-automatic packaging robots, which have a pre-stretching unit. Thanks to this, it stretches the film onto the stacks with a uniform force, so their holding force is guaranteed, while the specific material requirement per stack is unchanged and, more importantly, significantly reduced.
Result:
During the packaging test, 114 grams of 17 my stretch film with 200% pre-stretching was used to wrap a stack, while in the case of manual packaging this amount was 291 grams. In other words, automation has achieved a 61% material saving, while also freeing up and reallocating a large amount of labor.
Return on investment:
The success of the solution is proven by the fact that the investment per machine pays for itself within six months (as we have already confirmed in the packaging test), which is why our partner did not even wait for the next tender opportunity. This way, he was able to immediately switch to more economical operation, and the material saving of almost two-thirds can soon be recorded as a pure benefit. Not to mention that we have already saved the world from the unnecessary use and waste of a lot of plastic.
